A lot of people think that a “good employee” will be good no matter what environment you put them in, but that's simply not true. There are many internally motivated people in the workforce who lose that motivation when they realize that those around them are either incompetent or unable to accommodate their ambition. Nobody can be completely internally motivated. Everyone wants their boss to recognize when they've done a good job, and if a great employee never gets any kind of pat on the back, promotion, or raise, they are not going to stay at that company for very long.

If his old manager is as good as he says he is, maybe he can out-manage his current manager and morph him into a competent manager! While a good manager can do a lot for an employee, they cannot change their entire personality. If this manager is the kind of guy who screams over nothing, there might not be anything they can do to change that. If the employee's old manager is as good as he says he is, he would reprimand and even fire his current manager for his deranged behavior.
